Wonka

I went to see “Wonka” last night and I’m SO glad I did.

Although my head didn’t rate it, my heart LOVED it. It’s a crazy paradox. The music is really good – mostly dominated by Timothée Chalamet’s vocals and I must say he’s a really good singer. The characters are weird and the storyline is a bit thin on the ground (much like WISH) but again it doesn’t matter as what it DOES have is a sheen of something wonderful, childlike, creative, colourful, even magical! Every track (listening online again) has retained the feeling you get when you watch it. The tinkly, twinkly musicality of a Christmas movie and being a musical itself it’s a bit like watching The Greatest Showman. It’s addictive  - much like Willy Wonka’s magical chocolate, and chocolate features HEAVILY in the film. I even enjoyed Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa. Highlights include the songs “For a Moment”, “A World Of Your Own” and “Pure Imagination”.

Anyway, it’s nice to come out of the cinema practically dancing, smiling to myself and feeling encouraged. What a lovely way to end the year in film!
